Headed into its final game in the first half of District 16-4A boys soccer play, Centennial finds itself in a position to be alone in first place at the turn.

The Spartans put themselves in a good spot thanks to a 3-1 victory over Everman Friday night at home.

“It was a big win for us,” Centennial coach Chance Rose said. “It was the game we needed to create some space between us and other teams.”

Centenntial (5-2-8, 3-0-2) needed a win over Crowley at home Tuesday night to stay in first place no matter the outcome of Crowley’s game against Everman on Friday. Tuesday’s game ended after press time. The Spartans have the night off Friday and begin the second half of district play Tuesday at Kennedale.

“A win keeps us in first place,” Rose said. “But even with a tie, we could still be in the first place at the halfway point in district play depending on what happens between Crowley and Everman.”

The Spartans and Bulldogs combined for all their goals in the first half.

Junior forward Chris Johnson opened the scoring with 25:53 left to play in the first half. Junior midfielder Donovan Oliver picked up the first of three assists on the night.

The Bulldogs evened the match more than a minute later with a goal off a corner kick.

Things stayed tied for the next 16 minutes until the Spartans broke the game open.

in the first half, Johnson notched his second goal of the game off an assist from Oliver.

Centennial finished the scoring in first half with one second to play. Junior forward Caleb Allen closed it out with a goal off an assist from Oliver.

“We started shooting more in the first half and things kind of went our way,” Rose said.

Things didn’t go as well for the teams in the second half, as neither could muster a goal in the second half.

“In the second half, Everman tightened up the defense,” Rose said. “We also lost a little of our intensity. We got up to three goals and lost a lot of urgency.”
