DE Corey Freelon, Sr.

  • On Trey Schuman: "He caused them to not be able to run anything."
  • On early deficit: "After we made special teams mistakes, we kept our head in the game. We had a few [interceptions] to get the offense back on the field. We only allowed 7 points with the defense on the field."
  • On second half shutout: "We just kept our mind straight. Special teams picked it up and we just said 'We ain't gonna let them score no more.' We went out there and did what we do."
  • On being ready: "We worked out a little bit before the game, just to get our blood pumping. It got us energized."

OLB Kody Gentry, Sr.

  • On defensive play: "We're not finished yet. This is just the beginning. We knew our defense was going to be the dominant factor on our team, and we're just going to go out and show that. I feel we have the chemistry. Everyone is working together. Everyone knows their job. Everyone is doing perfect."
  • On HB Devin Stevenson's performance: "I didn't realize he was going to step up and do what he's done. In spring ball, we realized he was going to be one of our main contributors."
  • On QB Hayden Whitten's first start: "He can do anything. He's a kicker, quarterback, he used to be a receiver. We trust him on quarterback powers. He can run it, throw it and he can kick it. We really trust Hayden."
  • On starting 1-0: "We just want to keep building and getting better. 10-0, that's the goal."

DE Trey Schuman, Sr.

  • On sack, two blocked passes: "I'm just healthy. I feel 100 percent. With this new defense, I have a lot more freedom. I have a lot of looseness, as long as I do what I am supposed to do."
  • On difference in his play: "Last year, I wasn't able to get the push, but this year I'm 100 percent."
  • On defensive dominance vs. Saginaw: "It was probably Coach [Mike] Copeland's calls. He had a defensive plan they just couldn't stop."
  • On Saginaw's lone offensive TD: "The only reason they scored was because of some bad decisions by some of our guys. It took them 10 plays to go 25 yards."
  • On second half shutout: "We really didn't change anything in the second half. We cleaned up our play and didn't make any dumb decisions."

Head Coach Gary McElroy

  • On the defense allowing 1 score, 165 total yards: "The defense played outstanding. [On the scoring drive] we were about to turn them away until we got a flag thrown. Of course, that whole score was set up by poor kickoff coverage."
  • On special teams mistakes: "I'm pretty sure it's personnel. Maybe we were out of position. We'll try to fix it, or we'll replace them."
  • On HB Devin Stevenson's 141 yards, 3 TDs: "It's hard to bring him down, and he's got a burst where he can beat you."
  • On QB Hayden Whitten's first start (7-18, 98 yds, TD passing; 9-44, TD rushing): He had the weight of the world on his shoulders following up probably the best quarterback to ever come through here. Statistically speaking, Preston was second to none.
  • On starting QB Hayden Whitten: Hayden got the start based off of last week's scrimmage. The plan was that we were going to play both quarterbacks. Tristen [DeLeon] got almost the entire second half.
  • On it not being a rebuilding year: "Listening to the media outlets since the end of last season, it was what are you going to do? The quarterback is gone. You're not going to be very good, yada yada. Hayden had to listen to that. I told him after the game that he answered a lot of questions. He should be proud."
  • On the play of receivers: "I guess it was nerves. We repped the first play all week in practice. We knew it was going to be the first play. All three receivers were lined up in the wrong spot. It should have been a touchdown on the first play of the game. Then we dropped one that should have been a touchdown. But, we have seven guys we like at receiver and just need to find the right combination."
  • On WR Kayden Cassidy: "He came up with a huge catch in the fourth quarter. We're backed up because of penalty. Guys are draped all over him and Tristen puts it right on the money."
  • On the play of C Brayden Mercer, G Jon Saal, G Joshua Mauntel, T Travis Kleypas and T Alec Wilson: "I credit every bit of what we did offensively to them. They dominated the line of scrimmage. They did exactly what we envisioned them doing. They are big, strong, athletic kids."
  • On who may have moved up the depth chart: "I thought Ethan Baltazar played really well at outside linebacker. He was splitting time with J.C. Mueller. It's going to be hard to get Ethan off the field. He had a really good game."
  • On HB Aden Anderson, 7-35 rushing in relief of Stevenson: "Adan Anderson is going to carry the ball some to give Devin a spell. I thought he did well."
  • On next week's opponent FW Paschal: "We've actually seen quite a bit of them, because they were Saginaw's scrimmage last week. They don't dress many on varsity, but they have some skill. They are no one to take lightly. It doesn't matter who we go up against, if we are going to get punts blocked and kickoffs ran back, its going to be tough. They have as good of skill kids as anyone."
