Head Coach Gary McElroy

  • On approach to playing Paschal: "Tonight was a total team effort. We were a little flat in the pregame, and I think we thought it wasn't going to be as big of a challenge. We have to go look ourselves in the mirror, point to ourselves and say it is on us, and get better next week."
  • On the confidence he has in Burleson: "If you put this team up against anybody, I think we're going to win."
  • On preparation for Paschal: "They scrimmaged Saginaw and didn't do much against them. We had a pretty dominant performance against Saginaw. That may have been the worst thing we could have done is show our kids that film. I do think we're better."
  • On the early running game: "I thought Whitten did a great job in the first half of running the football. He was on fire. We had a one-two-punch with him and Devin."
  • On inconsistent offense: "We threw some errant balls, and then we had some for first downs that went through our hands. But then we have third-and-9 and complete a big pass and then immediately score on another big pass. The passing game is just inconsistent right now."  "...We had a pretty simple plan in the passing game. It was there. We're just not consistent enough. We're still coming into our own and trying to put the right personnel on the field."
  • On what would have changed the outcome: "Take a few dropped balls away, a kickoff return away and we win that game. You could narrow it down to three plays. We should be 2-0, but we're not."
  • On allowing kickoff returns for touchdowns in consecutive games: "We fixed it [last week] with personnel. We're going to have to look at it. It's not necessarily the kickoff coverage team's fault. We were trying to kick it high and left. It was kicked smooth down the middle. So, our coverage was set up to defend the kick to the left." "...We're up at least one score maybe two [in the fourth quarter] without that. We're not in the position where we fumble in their own backyard and they end up scoring [to take a 35-28 lead]."
  • On J.C. Mueller's 48-yard punt return for a TD: "Everyone gets away from the ball and J.C. makes a heads up play and runs it in for a touchdown."
  • On fourth-quarter series set up by long kickoff return: "We would have had great field position, but we had a hold. Then we turn around on the first play of the series and get another hold. We traded about 50 yards worth of real estate right there."
  • On Paschal's 17 unanswered fourth-quarter points: "They have some good skill people. If they get in space, they can do some damage. We tackled very poorly on defense. That's something that has to be addressed. The scheme was good and the plan was good, we just didn't execute. We were hitting them at the line of scrimmage and then just falling off. You can't do that with a good running back."
  • On the benefits of a game decided inside final 4 minutes: "Hopefullly there are some things we can take, learn from and in the future do a lot better at. That's why we have non-district games."
  • On the Elks moving forward: "We've got to find our identity. We're not last year's team, or the team from two years ago. We have new personnel."
  • On playing Weatherford: "Burleson and Weatherford have played each other for ions. But, we don't know much about them. We're going to have to study film and get ready to play."
