Local business owner inspired to hold school supply drive
If you have school-age children, then you know first-hand how expensive school supplies can be. Darik Caswell, a local Burleson business owner, is looking to help families who may not be able to provide all the needed supplies children are required to bring on the first day of school.
Caswell said he was raised by a single mother who worked two and sometimes three jobs to provide for her four children. Despite being a single parent,
Caswell’s mother gave back to those less fortunate in her community. That spirit of giving resonated with Caswell.
“My wife and I, neither of us came from much,” he said. “We didn’t grow up with a silver spoon in our mouths. Now that we are business owners, we want to give back.”
Caswell said the idea of a school supply drive was “spur of the moment.”
“Look, school supplies are expensive nomatter who you are,” Caswell said. “Kids need supplies throughout the year and uniforms. I decided to pull the trigger and went to Walmart and bought a basket, notebooks, folders, pencils and backpacks to get the drive started, and now I’m asking for the community’s help.”
Caswell would like to be able to outfit 100 children with all the school supplies they will need for the year. He’s hoping to deliver the supplies to different PTOs by Aug. 15.
“For a ten dollar bill, someone could come in here and really hook a kid up pretty good, if we get the word out enough I think we could easily attain that goal,” he said.
A complete list of needed school supplies can be found on the Burleson ISD website. Supplies needed include composition notebooks, three pocket and brad folders in blue, green and red, glue sticks, tissues, highlighters, dry erase markers, Crayola crayons, markers and colored pencils and ear buds. Caswell is also looking for backpacks to be donated.
As a thank you to those who contribute to the drive, Caswell is offering 10 percent off any service in his store.
“There is no expiration,” he said. “It’s just on the back of one of our business cards and you can redeem it at any time.”
If you’d like to donate school supplies, there is a basket set up at Burleson Texas iPhone Repair, located at 785 W. Hidden Creek Pkwy.
