Train collides with pickup in Egan
An impatient driver who decided to try an alternate route around a freight train ended up blocking FM 917 in Egan for more than three hours Wednesday morning.
The man, traveling in a Dodge pickup from Keene toward Interstate 35W, used the railroad company's gravel right-of-way to try and get past a train stopped on the railroad tracks at about 5:10 a.m.
"He tried to jump the tracks and got stuck," Sheriff Bob Alford said. "He saw the other train coming and bailed."
The pickup truck was struck by one train and ended up striking the other train. The man was unharmed. No railroad personnel reported injuries.
"We were fortunate not to have anyone injured," Alford said. "There are other ways around if you're that impatient. Turn around and find another way."
In the case of pickup truck versus a train, it's the train that wins, Alford said.
"I don't believe I've ever seen it end any other way," Alford said.
