Yorkie was fatally injured by pellet

A Yorkshire terrier was euthanized Tuesday, July 5, after it sustained a air gun pellet wound in the 500 block of SE Gardens Boulevard.

"We don't know who shot the dog and no one has come forward," Deputy Police Chief Doug Sandifer said. "We had no choice but to put the animal down."

Police received a call at 8:42 a.m. of torture to a non-livestock animal. The dog is believed to have sustained the wound about two hours earlier.

The terrier was taken to a local emergency veterinarian hospital.

"The X-ray showed a pellet lodged in the animal, with a wound to its lung," Sandifer said. "The owner thought the best decision would be to put the dog down."

With a wound to its lung, Sandifer said, the dog most likely was suffering from labored breathing.

"We tried to determine why the dog was shot and who shot it," Sandifer said. "We were unable to get any information."
