Ben Tinsley hired as Burleson Star editor
BURLESON – Publisher Tyler Patton announced Monday he has hired veteran Texas journalist Ben Tinsley to helm the Burleson Star.
Patton said he hired Tinsley as the new managing editor and senior staff writer because Tinsley has the enthusiasm and experience to lead the newsroom in Burleson into the future.
“Ben has demonstrated a love for community newspapers and a vision for what a quality community newspaper can accomplish,” Patton said. “It is this vision that will allow Ben to lead this newsroom to be the best weekly newspaper possible.”
Tinsley worked most recently as a staff writer for the Texas Jewish Post in Dallas, and as managing editor of the Glen Rose Reporter.
Tinsley, a second-generation journalist who turns 50 next month, believes he will be a good fit for this paper. He said he looks forward to working alongside his colleague, Burleson Star Sports Editor Ricky Moore. Tinsley and Moore both worked in the newsroom of the Lewisville Leader back in the 1990s.
“This is a great area and there are many important news stories to be told here,” Tinsley said. “I interviewed with Mr. Patton for positions on several of the newspapers in his chain, but this is the one I really wanted.”
Since Tinsley first broke the story of a cow trapped in an Amarillo sewer in 1992, he has been known for his coverage of quirky but hard-breaking news stories.
In the 1990s, Tinsley tracked down the original members of the Republic of Texas separatist group before they broke into factions. Also in the 1990s, he reported on the epidemic of heroin deaths in Plano.
Tinsley covered the aftermath of the Texas A&M Bonfire collapse, was front and center during Hurricane Rita’s rampage across East Texas, and braved the aftermath of the Great 2000 Fort Worth Tornado to bring a powerful story directly to readers.
Tinsley has won several writing and reporting awards from media organizations such as APME, the Press Women of Texas, and the Association for Women Journalists.
During his more than 25 years working in Texas, New Mexico, Indiana, Wyoming, and Nevada.
During his career, Tinsley has worked as a reporter for many newspapers, including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Arlington Morning News, the Amarillo Globe-News, the Galveston County Daily News, the Odessa American, the Baytown Sun, and the Sheridan (Wyoming) Press.
While in Las Vegas he covered business news for the Las Vegas Business Press and also the entertainment industry for publisher Michael Politz’s Vegas Eye blog and Las Vegas Food and Beverage Magazine.
Additionally, Tinsley worked as a radio reporter in Clovis, New Mexico, in the early 1990s.
