Burleson ISD celebrates Hughes Middle School renovation

Another project is about to be checked off  the Burleson ISD bond package list. Ground broke Monday at Hughes Middle School and construction has already started to give the outdated school a much-needed renovation. The project is one of four major construction projects approved by voters during the bond package election in May 2017.

“From day one when I started here, I could tell Hughes needed to be updated,” said Brett Jimerson, BISD superintendent. “Its remodel, renovation and expansion will have it looking like a brand new school by the time this thing is done. It will be beautiful.”

The goal, Jimerson said, is to have the project completed by summer 2019 but admitted that next year will be one of transition.

“The school will be under construction next school year but we are working to make sure that the construction is separate from where the students will be,” Jimerson said.

Andy Pickens, school board president, said the project would not have been possible without the commitment of the school board trustees.

“We all share the same vision in providing innovative education for all students,” he said.

Board Trustee Shawn Minor attended Hughes and spoke about the first time he stepped into the building as a 12-year-old sixth-grader. Minor said his first taste of Hughes left him with a bit of anxiety.

“Someone thought it would be a good idea to walk us over here and show us what this place was all about,” Minor said. “We came down here right by shop class and there were kids in there with full beards and I was convinced that that this is the place where it was going to end for me. I would be shoved in a locker and never heard from again.”

Fortunately, Minor said, that did not happen.

“This is the place where I met people who shaped the rest of my life and this was a great place to be a kid,” Minor said.

Minor and his wife have been life-long Burleson residents, and while other parts of Burleson have seen renovations and updates, one place that has not has been Hughes.

“I just want to thank the community of Burleson for stepping up and making the right decision on behalf of our children and thank you to the board and Dr. Jimerson for your vision, to give this building the makeover that is long past due.”
