Burleson ISD students honored by school board

BURLESON – It was standing room only at the beginning of the Burleson ISD’s Monday night school board meeting. Several students were hailed for their accomplishments in areas of music, film, and science.
Those accolades went to:
• The BHS Wind Ensemble, which was recognized for being a Commended National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project. The Mark of Excellence competition included entries from 236 of the finest musical ensembles in the nation, according to the district.
“The BHS Wind Ensemble ranked within the second quarter of those schools,” according to a release. “BHS submitted a recording of last spring’s UIL Concert performance, per the request of the Foundation for Music Education’s Executive Director, who happened to be in the audience during the April event.” The BHS Wind Ensemble students who earned the “commended national winner” status by virtue of their performance last spring include: Reid Balderas, Landon Bedore, Andrew Bracken, Chase Ellison, Gwen Else, Drew Hardie, Gabe Hartman, Makayla Lockhart, Topy Nguyen, Allie Price, Samantha Raleigh, Hayden Simms, Lela Veasey, Adelynn Young and Ethan Young. • Student filmmakers from this year’s Film Festival were recognized for their winning films. They include Jesse McLeod (Brock Elementary); Andrew Esquivel, Serhiy Skryshevskyy, Austin Dyer, and Harrison Lewis (Burleson High School); London Gonzalez, Andrew McGee, Jack Higham, Michael Eagan, Connor Williams, Hannah Brayfield, and Emily Keenan (Centennial High School); Brooklyn Manners, Liam Andrews, Ethan Moore, Hope Moore, and Ian Ray (The Academy at Nola Dunn); and Courtney Carlson, Briana Arrellano, Alexis Mazurowski, DeShonda Kennerson, and Giselle Perez (STEAM Middle School).
• Students on advancing Student Spaceflight Experiments Program – or SSEP – teams were also lauded. These include STEAM Middle School Submitting Teacher Facilitator Mindy Quisenberry and students Caleb Quisenberry, Philip Hamilton, and Billy Ward for “The Invertebrate Issue”;  STEAM Middle School Submitting Teacher Facilitator Mindy Quisenberry and students Danyel Archuleta, Mayleia Parker, Cole Rose, and Christian Steele for  “Concrete Compressive Strength”; and Nick Kerr Middle School Submitting Teacher Facilitator Allison Buckingham  and  students Abby Allen, Bailey Schaefer, Katie Shue, and Taylor Walker for “The Spectacular Sponge.”
• BISD’s hosting of the regional First LEGO League Challenge this past weekend also was recognized by the board. Hajek Elementary School Code Tamers won the Judges Choice Award. Coaches Shannon Jones and Jenn Loveland worked on this with team members: Cade Bomar, Caden Jones, Luke Loveland, Bryce Winters, Mason Cashion, Josh Andrews, and Ryan Chappotin. Hajek’s OBee Wan KeNoBees won the Project Award and advanced to the Second Round Qualifier Tournament. Coaches Jeanie French and Kim Keegan worked on this with team members. Dylan Bomar, Barrett Keegan, Brett Keegan, Daniel Kubala, Andrew Martin, Parker Moncrief, Elijah Sones, and Nykolas Winters. The Hughes Middle School Team #1 took First Place in the LEGO Robotics Core Values Challenge with Coaches Ray Blanco and Jonathon Smith working and team members: Carlos Alvarez, Lamdin Moore, Hayden Rodriguez, Hope Fore, Isaac Gregory, and Connor Rudewick.
