Burleson Police apprehend suspected car burglars
BURLESON – Five youngsters believed to have committed a spree of car burglaries around the Peach Lane area were apprehended and taken into custody Saturday after leading Burleson Police on a fairly tame car chase.
“They were traveling at a pretty low speed,” Burleson Police Chief Billy J. Cordell explained.
The pursuit began in the 500 bock of Peach Lane, extended at one point to Foxglove Lane, and concluded in Fort Worth, reports show.
The group – all males – consisted of a 17-year-old, a 14-year-old and three 15 year olds who were traveling in a KIA. All are believed to have participated in the early Saturday car burglaries in one capacity or another.
“We have all five of them in custody,” the chief said. “We have tied them to at least two and possibly three of these (car burglary) cases so far.”
The chase, which never exceeded 50 or so mph, began around 11 a.m. that day, reports show.
Cordell said authorities had the situation under control pretty much from the beginning of the chase.
“We got in right behind them on Peach and turned on our (police) lights,” the chief said. “They took off and kind of worked their way north. They crossed (FM)1187 and went to the north over there. They traveled west of (I-35) and through some neighborhoods at a pretty low speed. They then came back and ran off the curb on (FM) 1187 and busted one of their tires. They wavered a little more, went east on 87 on Oak Grove South and eventually came to a stop.”
Authorities then apprehended the group.
As a result:
• The 17-year-old, a Fort Worth resident, was arrested on suspicion of burglary of a motor vehicle and credit card abuse.
• The driver, a 15-year-old also believed to be from Fort Worth, was detained on suspicion of burglary of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and possession of a small amount of marijuana found on his person.
• The remaining youngsters, all believed to be from Fort Worth, were detained on suspicion of burglary of a motor vehicle.
The case remains under investigation. The detective in charge is still collecting information and trying to determine the exact scope of the crimes, the chief said.
Because the cases ended in Fort Worth, jurisdiction for them falls with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office.
