Gilaspie, Reading and McClendon sworn in Monday night
Burleson’s newly-elected City Council-members were sworn into their seats at Monday night’s council meeting. Stuart Gilaspie is council member for Place 1, Katherine Reading Place 3 and Dan McClendon, Mayor Pro Tem, Place 5. However, Gilaspie and McClendon were incumbents. Reading is the only newcomer to take her seat on City Council.
“Words cannot describe what it is like to win an election,” Reading said. “It has been a long road but one that I am honored to participate in. I am thankful for those who came to vote, who showed support, and for all candidates willing to participate in our treasured democratic process. I am especially thankful to those who have given words of encouragement, advice, and guidance. People like DanO Strong who believed in me enough to endorse me for his seat.”
Reading said that the advice and encouragement from other women helped her when she needed the extra push.
“My dear friends and strong woman leaders within the community consistently provided words of encouragement, focus, and wisdom along the way,” she said. “My first steps are to get up to speed with current council concerns at hand and push forward with my priorities for the coming budget process. It is an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. I plan to serve the Burleson residents with pride and be an approachable councilwoman.”
Mayor Shetter stated that it took a strong family to support a husband or wife who was seeking to serve their community by running for local office.
“We appreciate the sacrifice of our families and the this process is often as hard on our families as it is us, particularly if you have a young family,” Shetter said. “We rely on our spouses to do double duty while we are serving our citizens. It’s a special kind of service that our families agree to partake in.”
