Star editor wins first place writing award

A feature story about a local church ministry has blessed the editor of the Burleson Star with a prestigious writing award.

Bethann Coldiron, editor of the Star since December, has won first place for feature writing in the 2017 North & East Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

The Burleson Star competes in Division 4 for medium market cities in the annual contest that attracts entries from throughout the state.

Star Sports Editor Ricky Moore won second-place in Sports Coverage and third-place in Sports Writing.

Coldiron’s winning story — headlined “Saving the lost girls” — is about the efforts of Troy Brewer, senior pastor at Burleson’s OpenDoor Church, to rescue young girls from sexual slavery. The story appeared on the front page of the Oct. 26, 2017, issue.

“Draws you in and breaks your heart all at the same time,” commented one anonymous judge.

The story has been read online 15,208 times as of press time.

“I didn’t expect to win since this is the first time I have entered a professional writing contest,” said Coldiron, who has a degree in equine science from Weatherford College and is a 2015 graduate of Tarleton State University with a degree in communication with an emphasis in broadcast journalism.

Coldiron, who lives in Weatherford with her husband, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Tyler Brantley, was inspired to write the story after she heard about Brewer’s ministry and wanted to learn more about the survivors of sex trafficking.

“It grabbed my attention. I was surprised to learn how widespread sex trafficking is,” Coldiron said. “It’s an epidemic, especially when you consider it involves not only females, but also boys and men. It touches all countries, not just the impoverished third-world nations.”

Brewer phoned Coldiron the day the story published, saying the story resulted in numerous phone calls from readers asking how they can assist, Coldiron said.

“I am glad the story brings attention to the issue of sex trafficking and I hope the award brings more attention to the magnitude of this terrible issue,” Coldiron said.
