Tournament raises money for BISD Special Olympics

It took a special score to win a special tournament.

The foursome of Grayson Benevides, Kyle Luker, Shawn Minor and Jeff Rotan carded a jaw-dropping 19-under-par 53 to win the first Burleson ISD Blaze Special Services golf tournament Friday at Hidden Creek Golf Course.

Proceeds from the event support Burleson Blaze Special Olympic Athletes.

Three years ago, the Special Services Department at BISD started work on a project that would bring a Special Olympics delegation to Burleson. The result was the Burleson Blaze that has unified opportunities for disabled and non-disabled students to work together in the classroom and the community and a young athletes program that includes basketball and track and field.

Proceeds from the golf tournament will support travel, equipment and uniforms for the special athletes. A major goal is to involve the special athletes in the Special Olympics competition in San Antonio in May.
