Subaru program leads to $3,000 grant
Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties has received a $3,000 grant from Meals on Wheels America for its participation in Subaru of America’s eighth annual Share the Love Event.
From Nov. 22, 2015, to Jan. 2, Subaru of America donated $250 for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased to the customer’s choice of four participating charities, including Meals on Wheels America, of which Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties is a member.
“We look forward to participating in the Share the Love Event each year,” said Vinsen Faris, executive director for Meals-on-Wheels. “It is a great opportunity to engage the community and bring to light senior issues such as hunger, isolation and loss of independence for our elderly neighbors.”
Meals-on-Wheels partnered with Hiley Subaru for the fourth consecutive year. Members of the Hiley staff volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels, delivering meals to elderly neighbors in Johnson County. Promotion of the event also included participation in several holiday parades.
During "Share the Love," a social media campaign was created to allow the sharing of photos, activities and stories of clients served, utilizing Facebook, Twitter and a website blog.
Grant funds will allow for the expansion of Meals-on-Wheels' breakfast program, an initiative sustained by local dollars. The breakfast meal packages delivered Monday through Thursday ensure the most vulnerable meal recipients receive additional nourishment and support to keep them healthy and in their own homes where they want to be, a press release reads.
