Five Elks sign to play football in college

National Signing Day last Wednesday was a proud one for Burleson football coach Gary McElroy as he watched five of his players sign letters of intent to play football in college.

Signing for the Elks were tight end Brock Williams (West Texas A&M), nose guard Jaterrius Pleasant (Texas A&M Commerce), outside linebacker Issac Dagley (Hamilton College), defensive back Chance Showers (Texas Lutheran) and linebacker/tight end Kameron West (Southwestern Assembly of God).

McElroy said Williams, Pleasant and Dagley should stay at the position they played at Burleson in college. Showers could play cornerback or safety at Texas Lutheran while West could play linebacker or tight end at SWAGU.

“It will depend on what he develops into and what they need,” McElroy said.

Since the start of the season, McElroy has had nothing but praise for this senior class and these five players exemplify that class, he said.

“These are some of the best kids in school as far as character and model students,” McElroy said. “I couldn’t be more happy for these guys. This senior class is a great one and they are a great representation of this senior class.

These guys are ones that the younger guys can look up to and follow in their footsteps.”

McElroy said all five are well-deserving of their scholarships and that possibly a couple more players could sign later. Jaylen Johnson, the Offensive MVP from District 9-5A, won’t be playing football in college.

“Jaylen had multiple offers to play football but his passion and first love is basketball,” McElroy said. “In the end, that will all work out for him.”

The talented group of signees will represent Burleson and the Elks’ football program well in college, McElroy said.

“I think all five of these guys will have good collegiate careers,” McElroy said. “They’re going to places where they will have the opportunity to play fairly early and I think they will enjoy it. I look forward to seeing them play in the future.”
