Elks Farnell finishes 23rd at regionals, Centennial golfers gain experience

Conditions were tough at times for the Burleson ISD golfers last week at the Class 5A Region II golf championships.

Playing in the boy’s tournament last Monday and Tuesday, Burleson senior Pierson Farnell fired a two-day total of 154 to finish tied for 23rd place with six other golfers at the Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club.

“Pierson did a great job of fighting through less than favorable conditions on the first day to shoot an 80,” Burleson coach Ted Tomchesson said. “The second day the conditions were much better and Pierson took advantage of it shooting a 74. It has been a privilege to have Pierson apart of Burleson’s golf program for the last four years.”

Farnell will play at Midwestern State next year.

Centennial sophomore Corbin Franco shot a two-day 169 to finish in a tie for 59th place with four other players.

“Corbin struggled some on the first day in some windy, tough conditions,” Centennial coach Matt Dunn said. “He had four bad holes but it was a good learning experience for him since it was his first appearance in regionals. The second day, Corbin hit the ball much better as we adjusted his alignment after the first day but he struggled on the greens or he would have shot in the low 70s. It was a great experience for him and he still finished ahead of a lot of players. He will use it as a learning experience and be a better player as a result.”

Centennial had a pair of players in the girl’s tournament on Wednesday and Thursday.

Amanda McKesson finished tied for 36th place with four other players after tallying a two-day today of 190. Matte Wilkins placed 52nd shooting a two-day total of 198.

“The girls also faced some tough conditions with wind and rain on the first day and everybody’s scores were high,” Dunn said. “They both learned a lot and realized where the weaknesses are in their games.  Amanda and Mattee both hit the ball well both days but, much like Corbin, struggled around and on the greens. The Greens are elevated and fast and firm which magnified all the mistakes around and on the greens.

“I’m really proud of all three players. The amount of time and effort that they put in all year paid off at district.  They all three will learn from the regional experience and grow to be a better player as a result.”
