Elks find offensive linemen

Burleson started its second week of spring football workouts on Monday. Here’s a look into how things are going for the Elks.

Burleson coach Gary McElroy entered drills needing to find a couple of offensive lineman

He might just have found them in juniors Austin Stavely and Nick Lott.

“We didn’t graduate much,” McElroy said. “The offensive line is the biggest area of review.”

With nose guard Jaterrius Pleasant graduating in May, the Elks’ coaching staff is seeking someone to plug up that hole. Senior Anthony Love and junior Garrett Lake fill the gap.

“There is some competition at nose guard but I don’t think we are going to fall off there that much,” McElroy said.

Burleson has plenty of offensive skill position players at receiver in; Aden Anderson, Jaden Dotson,  Jacob Moss, and Mikah Stabeno.

The trick, according to McElroy, is finding who fills what role where.

Joining Caleb Lewis at running back will be Jarrett Austin, who played with the junior varsity last season.

McElroy said Lewis and Austin will see playing time together in the backfield.

Quarterback Jacob Amador is asking all the right questions and is doing well, McElroy said.

“I told him to turn it loose,” McElroy said. “I want to see what you can do with the offense. He’s exploring and sometimes he makes bad decisions and sometimes it’s really good. He’ll be fine.”

The Elks will hold their spring game May 24. Burleson opens the season Sept. 7 at Denton Braswell.
