Younger Elks shine in scrimmage

Burleson football coach Gary McElroy likes spring football because it gives younger players a chance to shine.

“Spring ball is good because it gives us a chance to evaluate younger players,” McElroy said. “Even though we have a veteran secondary coming back we had a few younger ones play well in the scrimmage.”

Friday night, current sophomores Jackson Shaha and Chandler Hampton had great efforts in the secondary during the Elks scrimmage.

Shaha, a safety, and Hampton, a cornerback, each had interceptions Friday and they weren’t your regular “look what I found” moments of larceny, McElroy said.

“They made great plays on the ball and turned in some diving catches,” McElroy said.

The week of practice ending well after starting slowly because of STARR Testing on Monday and Tuesday.

“Monday and Tuesday’s practices weren’t what you envisioned because kids are getting out there late because of testing,” McElroy said. “But things picked up later in the week. The scrimmage on Friday was very productive.”

Another bright spot has been the play of running backs Caleb Lewis and Jarrett Austin and their pass-catching ability, which has added a new dimension to the Elks offense, McElroy said.

“Both are not only physical and shifty runners but they are also exceptional receivers out of the backfield,” McElroy said. “They are really adding a whole new dimension to the offense with their pass catching ability.”

With two weeks of workouts remaining. McElroy is looking for more consistency from his players.

“It’s all starting to fit in place,” McElroy said. “We gave them a lot in the first two weeks and now we are just going about fine-tuning things in the last two weeks. We want to see them get better at their assignments. I want to see consistency in practice and the light bulbs start to go on.”

The Elks close out spring drills Thursday night with their annual spring game. The freshman will play at 6 p.m. with the underclassmen playing at 7 p.m.
