Four qualify for national championships
Four Burleson-area wrestlers qualified for USA Wrestling Cadet/Junior National Championships.
The four qualified by finishing in the top three in their weight class at the Texas State Championships. Centennial’s Jaren Powell qualified in the Cadet 126-pound class in both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman events.
Centennial’s Hank Meyer and Wesley Goleman and Burleson’s Aubrey Yauger also qualified in the Freestyle division.
Meyer qualified in the 160-pound cadet class while Goleman qualified in the 100-pound cadet class. Yauger qualified in the girls’ 127-pound School Girl division.
The National Championships will take play July 12-20 at the Fargodome in Fargo, ND.
Powell defeated John Richardson, who was wrestling for the Prosper High School Wrestling Club, by fall at the 22-second mark to take first place in the Freestyle competition.
In pool competition, Powell went undefeated.
Powell won by fall over the Cypress Wrestling Club’s Alec Strange in 50 seconds. He beat W4R Training Center’s Jude Camacho by technical fall, 12-1.
Powell beat VICI Wrestling Club’s Robert Bautista by fall in 33 seconds and won by fall in 1:48 over Alamo City Wrestling Club’s Joe Huerta.
In the Greco-Roman division, Powell topped Richardson in 39 seconds to win the title.
To reach the title match, Powell dropped the All American Wrestling Club’s Kyle Edwards by fall in 26 seconds. He topped Bautista by fall in 2:29 and beat New Braunfels Elite’s Donovan Fisher by fall in 30 seconds.
Yauger took first place with a pair of 10-0 technical fall wins over Hallie Daniel of the All American Wrestling Club. Yauger competed for the Mansfield Wrestling Club.
Meyer finished second in the 160-pound class after 23-20 decision to Mario Danzi from the Best Trained Wrestling Club.
Meyer went 3-0 in his pool. He topped VICI Wrestling Club’s Ashton Boyd by fall at 20 seconds. Meyer defeated the Coppell Stars Wrestling Club’s G.B. Uppall by technical fall 10-0 and Frisco Wrestling Club’s John Thornton 12-0 by technical fall.
Coleman finished third in the 100-pound class with a 10-0 technical fall win Baker Hunter from the Frisco Heritage High School Wrestling Club
In pool competition, Goleman defeated the Spartan Mat Club’s Jake Olson by technical fall 12-1. He then lost to the New Braunfels Elite’s Ethan Huerta for fall at the 1:40 mark.
