Elks close out spring workouts tonight

If Burleson football coach Gary McElroy had his druthers he wouldn’t be sad if spring football drills ended on Friday after the Elks final scrimmage.

Basically, McElroy and his coaching staff have seen all they need to see from the Elks during the first three weeks of drills.

“We have seen what we need to see,” McElroy said. “I would have been happy if last Friday was our last day just because of the progress the kids have shown and where we are right now. I’m pleased with it.”

The Elks practiced Tuesday and Wednesday and will close out spring drills tonight with their annual spring game. The freshman will hit the field at 6 p.m. and the upperclassmen with square off around 7 p.m.

The upperclassmen will be divided into two squads. One team will be the first-team offense and the second-team defense while the other will be formed by the first-team defense and the second-team offense.

The game will be the final chance for the Elks to shine and they will have an opportunity to let it all hang out.

It will be an opportunity for the coaches to see how they will play outside the confines of a controlled scrimmage situation.

“We were going to take the training wheels off so it will be more of a game situation,” McElroy said. “We want to see execution. We want them to go out there at game speed and execute. There won’t be any coaches on the field giving any last tidbits of information or available to give advice.”

One of the areas that McElroy wants to see what the No. 1 offensive line can do.

Going into spring drills the offensive line was an area of concern for the coaching staff. The unit was hit hard by upcoming graduation.

McElroy said the unit has come a long way over the past three weeks.

“We knew who the guys were going to be to fill those spots,” McElroy said. “They have been steadily improving over the past three weeks.”

The line has been reshuffled because of an injury. McElroy said the injury isn’t serious but the player will miss tonight’s game.

Defensively, McElroy wants to see consistent play at the nose guard position and at outside linebacker.

“We are rotating several guys at (outside linebacker) so we will see what transpires and who emerges,” McElroy said. “All and all we are pretty pleased with the spring. We have worked them hard in the off-season and spring. As long as we are seeing improvement every day during the spring we are happy with what is going on.”

Last scrimmage goes well

In the Elks final scrimmage Friday night, running backs Jarrett Austin and Caleb Lewis continued to shine. Reeivers Jaden Dotson, Mikah Stabeno, and Caden Johnson.

On defense, nose guard Garrett Lake and outside linebacker J.C. Mueller had good efforts in the scrimmage.
