Burleson still perfect in 9-5A
For the third time in District 9-5A play, Burleson’s tennis team shut out an opponent, defeating Cleburne Sept. 19 on the road to remain perfect in district play at 5-0.
In boys play, the Elks singles winners were Joe O’Brien, Connor Williams, Devin Richardson, Kole Bacon, Tanner Robertson and Garrett Brooks. In doubles play, O’Brien and Richardson; Williams and Levi Porter and Bacon and Robertson each won their matches.
Winning girls singles matches for Burleson were Brinley Brown, Hali Dinwiddie, Alexis Baker, Deanna Zaragoza, Katie Kirkpatrick and Neely Huskissan. The doubles winners for the Lady Elks were Brown and Zaragoza; Dinwiddie and Baker and Huskissan and Richardson.
Brooks and Kirkpatrick took the mixed doubles win.
Burleson (5-0 in district) hosted Arlington Seguin Tuesday. No results for the match were available.
Spartan drop close match to Cleburne
Centennial’s tennis squad suffered its second consecutive District 9-5A loss last Tuesday in a 10-9 home match with Granbury.
The Lady Spartans played well, winning four of six singles matches and all three doubles matches.
Playing at No. 1, Jacey Westbrook defeated Shannon Taylor, 3-6, 6-3, 13-11. Jaelyn Tucker at No. 2 beat Melody Mixon, 7-6, 6-1. On the No. 3 line, Ryleigh Moore topped Ashley Vyce, 6-4, 6-1, and at No. 4, Hannah Rudewick downed Carissa Taylor, 7-6, 6-0.
In girls doubles play, Tucker and Moore playing on the No. 1 line stopped Shannon Taylor and Vyce, 8-4. At No. 2, Rudewick and Simone Chalabi downed Mixon and Skye Dodson, 9-7, and at No. 3, Olivia Taylor and Rachel White beat Nicole Futch and Easton Miller, 8-4.
Trey Schatzmann helped collect both of the Spartan wins. In singles play, Schatzmann, playing at No. 2, defeated Anthony Barnett, 6-4, 6-4. In No. 1 mixed doubles play, Schatzmann and Westbrook topped Hayden Harris and Carissa Taylor, 8-4.
The Spartans (3-2 in district) played at Joshua Tuesday. No results were available at press time.
