Elks O’Brien opens regional tournament with victory
Burleson’s Joe O’Brien opened play at the Class 5A Region I tennis championships with a convincing first-round win.
O’Brien topped Fort Worth Southwest’s Ari Butterfield, 6-1, 6-1, April 17 at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Complex.
In the second round, O’Brien lost to No. 3 seed Andrew Azatian, from Lubbock, 6-3, 6-0.
The Elks mixed doubles team of Emma Boyd and Devon Richardson got off to a good start in their first-round match against Colleyville Heritage’s Arsh Durran and Sarah Halai taking the first set. They couldn’t keep the momentum going as they lost 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
In girls singles play, Burleson’s Alexis Baker fell to El Paso Jefferson’s Jia Diau, 6-3, 6-2.
Centennial’s boys doubles team of Jonah Barron and Trey Schatzmann dropped a first-round match to Aledo’s Miles Grubbs and Lance McClure, 6-0, 6-0.
