High school sports are back
In the next few weeks, things will get busy for student-athletes at Burleson and Centennial.
Volleyball practice started Wednesday for the Lady Elks and Lady Spartans. The squads will scrimmage on Friday and Saturday and play their first games Tuesday.
Burleson hosts Stephenville Tuesday while Centennial, under new coach Julie Williams, travels to Saginaw Chisholm Trail.
The Lady Elks first tournament will be in Abilene at the Bev Ball Classic. The tournament is Aug. 10-11. The Lady Spartans first tournament starts Thursday and runs through Aug. 11. Centennial will be playing at the Mansfield Tournament.
Both cross country programs open practice Monday in preparation for the upcoming season. The squads will have a while until their first competition.
Burleson’s first meet will be Aug. 25 at the Cowtown Challenge in Richland Hills. Centennial’s opening meet will be Aug. 25 at the Woodhouse Invitational in Waxahachie,
In a change, freshman football players at Burleson and Centennial will open practice a week early. In the past, freshman players started workouts with the upperclassmen.
The first day of workouts for upperclassmen will be Aug. 13. The early practices will be in helmets and shorts. The first day for full contact will be Aug. 18.
Burleson will scrimmage Birdville at BISD Stadium at 7 p.m. Aug. 24. The Elks open their season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at home against F.L. Schlage from Kansas City, Kansas. Burleson’s first road game is at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 against Denton Braswell at C.H. Collins Stadium.
Centennial has a scrimmage slated against Waco at 7 p.m. at Centennial. The Spartans begin the season at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at Corsicana. Centennial’s first home game will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7 versus Denison at Burleson Stadium.
The Elks and Spartans will play for “The Boot” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5.
