Sneed’s heads up play lifts Elks past Spartans

After battling each other Friday night, Burleson and Centennial’s boy’s basketball teams playoff hopes took blows Tuesday night as each lost in District 9-5A play.

Burleson fell at Cleburne, 52-50, despite at game-high 32 points from Jaylen Johnson. At Centennial, the Spartans lost to Granbury, 77-53. Nate Adcock and Anthony Hunter each scored 10 points for Centennial.

Both teams have two games left in 9-5A action.

The Elks (19-13, 5-7) host district co-leader Arlington Seguin Friday and plays Tuesday at Crowley. Centennial (16-13, 6-6), which is tied for fourth place with Crowley and Granbury, plays at Joshua Friday and hosts Everman Tuesday.

Tuesday’s losses came following Burleson’s 72-69 9-5A home win over Centennial Friday night.

The Elks pulled out the victory even though Johnson, who finished with 17 points, had fouled out with 5:04 to play and Burleson leading 59-58.

The game swayed back-and-forth until Burleson’s Josiah Sneed made a huge play that extended the Elks advantage to 71-67. After Sneed made his first free throw with 57.3 left that gave Burleson a 69-67 lead, Sneed missed his next free throw and beat four Spartans to rebound.

Sneed reset the Elks offense bringing the ball to the top of the three-pointer arc. He then drove the lane and hit a running shot for a four-point lead.

“When I missed it I just had to redeem myself,” Sneed said. “I couldn’t let my teammates down. I didn’t think I was going to make the shot but I did.”

Sneed finished the game with 15 points while Justin McMaster and Isaiah Nelson each scored nine points.

The Spartans closed to within 71-69 with 21.3 seconds to play but could get no closer.

Centennial’s Hayden Smith scored a game-high 22 points. Zach Elliot and Hunter each added 10 points.
