Squads gear up for district championships

Burleson and Centennial’s cross country teams got in their final race Friday before today’s District 5-5A championships.

Both squads were in Granbury for the Granbury Race of the Loot that was held on the Granbury City Disc Golf Course.

The district championships will take place today at Burleson’s Chisenhall Fields. The top three boys and girls teams will advance to the Class 5A Region I championships in Lubbock on Oct. 22.

Burleson’s boys topped Centennial in Class 6A-5A race. The Elks scored 132 points to place second while Centennial was fourth with 147 points. Duncanville was first with 39 points and Azle was third with 34 points.

The Elks were led by junior Elias Word who finished fifth in a time of 17 minutes, 33.77 seconds. Junior Chris Smith placed 11th in a time of 17:53.70. Freshman Ace Garcia was 20th in a time of 18:23.81. Junior Adrian Reyes placed 40th in a time of 19:00.56 and junior Will Stevenson was 60th in a time of 19:30.42.

Sophomore Issac Smith finished 63rd in a time of 19:34.76. Sophomore Jacob Perez placed 64th in a time of 19:35.06. Freshman Dylan McMullen was 66th in a time of 19:37.37. Sophomore Xavien Garcia finished 75th in a time of 19:50.78 and freshman Tash Dalal was 92nd in a time of 20:26.52.

Centennial’s top runner was senior Trenton Kelly who finished second in a time of 17:28.01. Junior Andy Shue placed 24th in a time of 18:29.44. Junior Ryan Bergami was 26th in a time 18:32.61. Josh Meador placed 33rd in a time of 18:41.57 and freshman Hayden Whitehead was 70th in a time of 19:46.98.

The Lady Elks finished fourth with 121 points. Azle took first place with 62 points. Waco Midway was second (69 points) and Duncanville was third (105).

Junior Meadow Renfro paced the Lady Elks finishing sixth in a time of 21:29:93. Sophomore Briyanna Barajas placed 24th in a time of 22:48.84. Freshman Avery Wang was 27th in a time of

22:53.12. Junior Emily Tebo finished 31st in time of 22:57.83 and freshman Maggie Prewitt was 42nd in a time of 23:34.37.

Sophomore Keila Juarez placed 46th in a time of 24:06.97. Junior Bridgett Montes finished 65 in a time of 24:44.13. Freshman Elissa Jackson was 68th in a time of 25:03.67 and junior Haley Vasquez was 76th in a time of 25:52.74.
