Wasik helps Lady Elks blast Lady Spartans, 16-6
The last time Burleson faced Centennial in softball, the Lady Spartans scored seven runs in the seventh inning for a 14-9 victory.
After watching her squad in practice Friday morning, Lady Elks’ coach Summer Owen was certain things would be different when her team played at Centennial that night.
“I had a feeling things were going to go well,” Owen said.
Owen’s team didn’t let her down as they hammered the Lady Spartans for a 16-6 District 5-5A victory.
Sophomore pitcher Brailey Wasik had a big game in the circle and at the plate for Burleson.
Wasik scattered 11 hits over seven innings for the win. The sophomore allowed six runs, struck out six and walked two.
Hitting-wise, Wasik went five-for-five with a home run and two doubles. In the fifth, Wasik had the big-blow in a five-run inning with a three-run home run.
“Brailey pitched well and her bat was strong for us,” Owen said.
Fellow sophomore Audrey Schneidmiller had four hits in the win. The catcher finished with three doubles, drove in two runs and threw out two runners attempting to steal.
Natali Wheeler belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Isabellla Inocencio added a solo shot in the sixth inning.
“My girls can hit,” Owen said. “The girls played great tonight. They finally played to their potential and I was glad they were able to do it against Centennial.”
The win was the first for the Lady Elks since April 7, 2017. Centennial leads the all-time series 11-3.
After one inning it seemed the game might be a wild one as Burleson scored three runs and the Lady Spartans answered with four runs. The Lady Elks then added two runs in the second and five in the third for a 10-4 lead.
In the final three innings, Burleson outscored Centennial, 6-2, for the win.
Centennial got three hits each from Paris Green, Kylee Gowin and Samantha Barker. Paris Green and Madison Thurman each hit triples and Presley Green drove in two runs. Karter Hill finished with two hits.
