Burleson hammers Saginaw in season-opener
If not for a missed tackle in the first quarter, Burleson might have registered a shutout Friday night play at Saginaw.
Instead, the Elks had to settle for a 56-7 whipping of the Rough Riders.
Senior quarterback Hayden Whitten was masterful for the Elks. In his second year guiding the Elks’ offense, Whitten threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score.
Those five touchdowns came in the second quarter after Burleson had fallen behind 7-0 following a 34-yard scoring strike from Xavier McAfee to Fred Tshitoko. A missed touchdown saving tackle allowed the Rough Riders (0-1)) to lead in the second quarter.
From there the Elks (10-) took over score the 35 second-quarter points and 56 unanswered points.
After Whitten scored on a 1-yard run he went to the air for four scores. The senior completed six of 14 passes for 242 yards.
First came a 65-yard scoring toss to Aden Anderson. Jaylen Johnson, who added a 50-yard punt return in the fourth quarter, nabbed touchdown passes of 17 and 39 yards to give the Elks a 28-7 lead. Whitten capped off the second quarter scoring with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Lewis.
Backup quarterback Jacob Amador scored twice the second half. The junior found the end zone on runs of seven and eight yards.
The Elks home-opener is Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Fort Worth Paschal at Burleson ISD Stadium.
