Burleson preps for 9-5A championships

The final run for Burleson’s cross country team before the District 9-5A championships went well Thursday as the Lady Elks and Elks competed at the Race For the Loot in Granbury.

The next race for the team will be the District 9-5A meet Friday morning at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex.

“I thought we ran pretty well,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “Meadow (Renfro) is running really well for the girls and Elias (Word) and Chris (Smith) are running really well for the boys.”

The Elks finished sixth after scoring 195 points. Azle won the title with 88 points, Richland was second (91 points) and Centennial finished third (105).

Sophomores Smith and Word led Burleson’s boys on Friday. Smith finished 10th in a time of 17:59.70 and Word placed 12th in a time of 18:00.09. The next Elks to cross were seniors CJ Kinsey (35th, 18:33.85) and Zane Rice (65th, 19:16.47). Freshman Alex Adame was 86th in a time of 19:46.09 and sophomore Will Stevenson finished 99th in a time of 20:05.73.

Others running for the Elks were sophomore Adrian Reyes (103rd, 20:17.30), junior Andrew Cranford (115th, 20:40.77), freshman Xavien Garcia (135th, 21:20.97), senior Christian Barnes (139th, 21:31.29) and junior Payton Brown (144th, 22:02.33).

The Lady Elks scored 175 points to finish seventh. Centennial took the title with 32 points, Richland placed second (39 points) and White Settlement Brewer was third (114).

A pair of sophomores led the Lady Elks as Meadow Renfro finished 10th in a time of 21:02.33 and Bridgette Montes was 37th in a time of 22:31.16. The next three runners to cross were freshmen who finished within 1.92 seconds of each other. Kaela Juarez placed 47th in a time of 23:17.22, Emily Tebo was 48th

in a time of 23:17.46, and Bryanne Barajas was 49th in a time of 23:19.14.

Also competing for the Burleson were sophomores Kassedi Zapata (63rd, 23:54.26), Kaylie Hoerig (66th, 24:05.31) and Haley Vasquez (83rd, 25:20.73).

Enis said the Lady Elks will be without Jordan Rosser at the district meet this weekend because of an injury.
