Burleson's Kirkham garners second-team honors
Burleson sophomore point guard Caitlyn Kirkham played better and better as the Lady Elks season progressed.
In district play, she led the team in rebounds and assists. Her play drew the attention of the coaches of District 9-5A as they honored her with second-team honors on the recently released all-district team.
“I was mostly impressed with her ability to rebound the ball from her guard position,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “Her improvement as a point guard allowed us to move Carlen Payne to the shooting guard which is Carlen’s strength as a player.”
Enis said by the end of the season Kirkham was doing a good job breaking the opponents presses and making good decisions on the fast break or press break.
The Lady Elks had three honorable mention players in junior guard Payne, junior forward Jailah Ivory and junior center Sarah Reid.
“Ivory’s versatility also allowed us to play a bigger lineup when we matched up with Centennial, Crowley and Granbury,” Enis said. “We could play Sarah Reid, Lexi Parr or Madi Bell until she got injured.”
