Elks flatten South Hills for opening game victory
Burleson’s first playoff victory since 2014 was a relative cakewalk Friday afternoon.
The Elks run-rules Fort Worth South Hills, 10-0, in Game 1 of the team’s best-of-three Class 5A Region I bi-district playoff series at Crowley.
Burleson last win came over Fort Worth Arlington Heights, 7-6, on May 1, 2014.
Starting pitcher Cameron Hauch baffled the Scorpions (14-10-1) for five innings. Hauch used just 62 pitches to blank South Hills. He allowed three hits and struck out five.
The Elks opened the scoring in the second inning when Cody Griever reached on a two-out infield hit. Griever eventually scored when Isaiah Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
In the third inning, Burleson scored twice on a throwing error on Blake Myers sacrifice bunt attempt. The error scored Jagger Johns and Carson Hallack, who had singled. The Elks went up 4-0 when Myers scored on a Griever sacrifice fly.
Burleson tacked on four runs in the fourth, the big blow of the inning was a two-run double by Myers. The Elks completed the run-rule win thanks to a pair of runs in the fifth.
Game 2 of the series is slated for noon Saturday at Crowley. A deciding third game, if needed is scheduled for 30 minutes after the second game.
The winner of the series will face the winner of the series between Colleyville Heritage and Denton Ryan.
