Elks go 3-1 at Laredo Tournament
Burleson’s baseball team headed to Laredo last weekend to play in the Laredo Border Olympics tournament after the North Texas Classic was canceled because of inclement weather.
The Elks, who begin play at the Elk Classic today, went 3-1 in Laredo.
Burleson closed out play Saturday with a 10-run outburst in the second inning as it defeated Donna, 12-0, in a four-inning run-rule win.
Isaiah Smith tossed a four-inning shutout allowing one hit while striking out four.
Colton McCallum, Kayden Jameson and Nik Bengochea each had two hits in the win. Jacob Amador, McCallum and Jameson drove in a pair of runs. Also driving in runs were Kayden Cassidy, Carson Hallack, Bengochea and Luke Magilley.
Hayden Alexander had the lone extra-base hit with a triple.
Burleson’s second game of the tournament was a 10-0 loss Saturday to Corpus Christi Veterans. The Elks finished with hits from T.J. Pound, Jameson, Hallack, and McCallum.
Thursday, the Elks opened the tournament blasting Brownsville Veterans, 8-0, behind the pitching of Cassidy and Kane Rodriguez.
Cassidy scattered two hits and struck out 10 over five innings. Rodriguez worked a scoreless inning.
Amador led the offense driving in two runs. Also collecting RBI were McCallum, Hallack, Pound, Alexander, and Jameson.
In their second game on Thursday, the Elks scored twice in the seventh to top Eagle Pass, 3-2.
Burleson opened the seventh with back-to-back singles by Cassidy and Jameson. With one-out, Hallack ripped a two-run double to left that would prove to be the game-winner. Hallack had all three RBI for the Elks in the game.
Burleson’s starter Alexander worked four innings and Cameron Hauch tossed three innings to register the save.
