Elks topple Weatherford to go to 3-0

After falling behind early, Burleson roared by scoring 23 first-half points on the away to 29-15 home win over Weatherford Friday night at Burleson ISD Stadium.

The victory kept the Elks perfect at 3-0. It is the first time Burleson has started the season 3-0 since 2009. The Elks have the week off before opening District play Sept. 29 at Granbury.

Caleb Lewis had a big night for the Elks scoring on runs of 1, 21 and 43 yards. Lewis finished the game with 28 carries for 186 yards.

Weatherford (0-3) took an 8-0 lead on a 31-yard pass from Corban Campbell to Jake Spooner. Campbell followed that up with a two-point conversion pass to Williams Gonzalez.

Jacob Amador, making his second start following an injury to the Hayden Whitten, cut the lead to 8-7 on a 20-yard scoring run.

Lewis gave the Elks a 13-8 first-quarter lead after a 1-yard scoring run.

The Elks’ defense set up the next score after forcing a turnover in its third straight game. Sam Martin’s interception turned into a 20-8 lead when Lewis scored on a 21-yard run with 8:19 left in the half.

Burleson’s next possession resulted in an 11-play drive that ended on a failed fourth down attempt at the Weatherford 24.

The Elks got the ball on the Kangaroos’ next play when Carson Hallack intercepted a Campbell pass and returned it to the Weatherford 11. Burleson couldn’t turn the turnover into a touchdown and settled for 23-yard field goal by Edgar Lopez with 50 seconds to play for a 23-8 halftime lead.

Early in the second half, Weatherford cut the Elks lead to 23-15 when Campbell hit Gonzalez for a seven-yard score that cut the Elks lead to 23-15.

From there the teams traded their next four possessions with no scores as penalties plagued both teams.

With 1:55 to play, Lewis broke free for a 43-yard score that put the Elks up 29-15 with 1with a 43-yard rushing touchdown.

With Jaylen Johnson facing double coverage all night, Amador, who threw for 147 yards, turned to Aden Anderson. Anderson caught five passes for 60 yards while Johnson still managed three catches for 61 yards.
