Hughes expects more from his Elks
There was a time when finishing third at the tournamnent was a big thing for the Burleson boys soccer program.
Those days are long gone.
After winning a share of the District 9-5A title last season, Elks coach Travis Hughes is expecting big things from his team.
“That’s not good enough for us,” Hughes said. “There’s no shame in getting third place, but our route to get there was not what we wanted it to be. We were kind of hit and miss. There were times we looked pretty good and times we looked pretty bad. That’s not the level we want to be at.”
The Elks (1-1-1) finished third at the Saginaw Boswell Friendly Invitational.
In the their season-opener, the Elks played Region I powerhouse Fort Worth North Side to a 0-0 draw on Thursday.
Friday, Burleson fell to Fort Worth Eastern Hills, 2-1, Freddy Hernandez scored the Elks lone goal of the match
In their first game on Saturday, the Elks blasted Keller Central, 4-0, as Josh Padilla, Deangelo Garza, Henry Garcia and Blake Ashworth each scored goals.
In the third-place game, Burleson downed tournament host Boswell, 2-1, behind goals from Hernandez and Padilla.
The host Waco Connally Friday and host Fort Worth Southwest Tuesday.
