Lady Elks down South Hills, 4-1, in playoff opener
Facing Fort Worth South Hills in a one-game playoff, Burleson’s softball team seemed to find motivation when the Lady Scorpions scratched a run in the top of the fourth inning.
The Lady Elks responded with four run in the bottom of the inning on the way to a 4-1 in a Class 5A Region I bi-district playoff game Thursday at Burleson.
Burleson will take on the Boswell in the area-round of the playoff series. Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Boswell. Game 2 is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Burleson with game three if needed to follow.
After leaving a pair of runners on bases in the second and third innings, the Lady Scorpions took a 1-0 lead when Ashley Rangel singled to open the inning and scored on an error when the Lady Elks’ right fielder misplayed a Vanessa Zamora two-out single.
Down 1-0, Burleson found a spark stringing together singles from Zoe Miranda, Lauren Isbell and Lauren Rich to load the bases. With one out, Maddie McGovern tied the game with a RBI-single to center field. Saeya Esparza followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly to left. Emily Wilson broke the game open with a two-run single for a 4-1 lead.
Burleson pitcher Hannah Loudermilk allowed a pair of runners in the sixth and a runner in the seventh on the way to the complete game win. The senior scattered six hits over seven innings. She gave up one unearned run, walked none and struck out eight.
