Lady Elks, Elks keep making positive strides
Burleson’s cross country team keeps getting better with each meet.
Saturday at Centennial’s Spartan Invitational, the Lady Elks finished fourth with 87 points and the Elks placed fifth with 132 points.
“I thought we ran pretty well,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “We are slowly getting into shape.”
Sophomore Meadow Renfro led the Lady Elks Saturday finishing 14th in a time of 21:04.64.
The girls ran in a tight pack up front. The spread time between Renfro and the Lady Elks fourth runner, freshman Emily Tebo, was 48 seconds.
Sophomore Jordan Rosser finished 16th in a time of 21:06.53 and sophomore Bridgette Montes placed 17th in a time of 21:07.36. Tebo was 24th in a time of 21:52.02. Freshman Kaela Juarez was the Lady Elks fifth runner finishing 30th in a time of 22:28.06.
“The varsity girls are starting to come together,” Enis said. “I am pleased with them. The chemistry is good between them and they are pulling for each other. We just need that fifth runner to pick things up.”
Also racing for the Lady Elks were sophomores Kaylie Hoerig (33rd, 22:32.48), Kassedi Zapata (36th, 22:47.94), freshman Bryanne Barajas (39th, 23:13.19) and sophomores Haley Vasquez (46th, 24:04.61) and Camryn Masteller (50th, 24:45.03).
Last week, sophomore Elias Word paced the Elks and sophomore Chris Smith was the second Elk to finish. Saturday, Smith finished fifth in a time of 17:05.00 and Word placed ninth in a time of 17:17.97.
“Elias and Chris are running great,” Enis said. “Elias had a great start, then Chris passed him. Chris built a lead by the two-mile mark and was able to hold Elias off. Those two work extremely hard. They push each other in practice and at the meets.”
Senior CJ Kinsey was 34th in a time of 18:31.50 and senior Zane Rice finished 41st in a time of 18:42.95. Sophomore Adrian Reyes placed 69th in a time of 19:41.04.
Also running for Burleson were junior Andrew Cranford (83rd, 20:37.64), sophomore Donovan Morrison (88th, 20:53.9) and junior Payton Brown (89th, 20:54.47).
Burleson competes Friday morning at Cleburne’s Buzz Run.
