Lady Elks, Elks run well against tough foes
Facing tough competition, Burleson’s cross country teams placed in the Top 10 at the Fossil Ridge Run of the Panther at Keller Sports Complex.
The Lady Elks finished eighth with 174 points running in the Class 6A/5A division. Irving MacArthur finished first with 49 points. Hurst L.D. Bell placed second (67 points) and Saginaw Boswell was third 71.
“I liked how we competed Friday,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “We are in the toughest part of the season training wise so our legs are probably a little dead.”
As she has all season, junior Meadow Renfro was the Lady Elks top runner finishing 21st in time of 22 minutes, 6.55 seconds. Sophomores Bryanna Barajas and Emil Tebo were the next two Lady Elks to finish.
Barajas placed 34th in a time of 22:48.07 and Tebo was 36th in a time of 22:58.24.
Junior Kassedi Zapata finished 48th in a time of 23:30.61. Sophomore Kelia Juarez placed 54th in a time of 23:48.76. Freshman Maggie Prewitt was 72nd in a time of 25:04.86 and freshman Elissa Jackson was 81st in a time of 25:43.20.
“The boys are closing the gap between our top three and our next three runners and the girls are doing the same between our first and our second, third, fourth and fifth runners. We just have to keep that up.”
The Lady Elks spread time, the time between their first and fifth runner, was 1:42.76 while the spread time for the Elks was 1:27.82.
The Elks placed ninth with 212 points. Duncanville took first place with 38 points. Saginaw Boswell was second with 71 points and Keller Fossil Ridge was third (108 points).
Juniors Elias Word and Chris Smith had strong showings Friday. Word finished 22nd in a time of 18:20.14 and Smith was 26th in a time of 18:24.50. Freshman Ace Garcia placed 53rd in a time of 19:12.59.
Sophomore Xavien Garcia finished 69th in a time of 19:30.04. Junior Adrian Reyes placed 78th in a time of 19:47.96. Senior Andrew Cranford was 81st in a time of 19:52.03. Sophomore Isaac Smith was 95th in a time of 20:28.87 and freshman Yash Dalal was 103rd in a time of 21:15.96.
