Lady Elks fourth at Granbury

The second tournament appearance for Burleson’s volleyball team didn’t go as well as the first but the Lady Elks did make their way into gold bracket play over the weekend at the Granbury Tournament.

“I thought we played really well considering we played a lot of games and many of them were back-to-back,” Burleson coach D’Anna Newton said. “I wish we could have finished better than we did but it is what it is and we will have to go back to work.”

After coming in second at the Bev Ball Classic in Abilene, the Lady Elks placed fourth in Granbury.

Burleson (12-4) opened gold bracket play Friday beating Mansfield Timberview, 10-25, 25-23, 25-20. Then on Saturday, the Lady Elks topped El Paso Americas, 25-15, 25-22, to reach the semifinals.

The next two matches didn’t go Burleson’s way as the Lady Elks lost to Birdville, 25-14, 25-14, and Fort Worth Paschal, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20 in the third-place game.

“We are still working out the kinks and realizing what our weaknesses are,” Newton said. “Birdville was such a strong hitting team, they tested up on blocks. When we played Fort Worth Paschal they tipped the ball a lot and that caused trouble for us.”

The Lady Elks went 5-0 in pool play on Thursday and Friday. Burleson downed Richland (25-14, 25-17), Hurst L.D. Bell (25-19, 25-23), Euless Trinity (25-10 25-15), Seminole (25-16, 25-18) and El Paso El Dorado (25-21 25-22).

For the second consecutive week, sophomore outside hitter Emily Rich earned all-tournament honors.

“Emily did well for us,” Newton said. “She was one of our go-to players. When we needed kills she was able to produce for us.”

Tuesday night, Burleson was swept at Weatherford, 25-18, 25-12, 25-9.

“It wasn’t one of our best matches,” Newton said. “We just didn’t click tonight. Weatherford picked us apart in certain areas.”

The Lady Elks open play at the Arlington Invitational Friday.

Burleson will play at Arlington Lamar and is in a pool with DeSoto, Arlington Grace Prep, Paschal and Red Oak.
