Lady Elks get in final tournament before district
During its first two games over the weekend at the Lufkin Lady Lobo Showcase, Burleson’s girls soccer team had trouble finishing scoring chances.
The end result was a pair of ties during action on Thursday and Friday. The Lady Elks (5-2-1) rebounded Saturday with a five-goal effort in their tournament final.
Keeper Julia Mashburn and midfielder Jordan Rosser earned all tournament honors for the Lady Elks.
“The girls showed some perseverance this weekend,” Burleson coach Chris Leshinski said. “They had to deal with some sloppy conditions on grass fields.”
In their opening game on Thursday, the Lady Elks fell behind Longview, 1-0, with 17 minutes to play. Kristi Smedholen, an exchange student from Norway, scored her first varsity goal with 11 minutes left and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
“It was a fun match to watch,” Leshinski said. “The teams went back-and-forth, the whole game.”
Friday, Burleson tied Lufkin, 1-1, thanks to a penalty kick goal by Hannah Werner with three minutes to play. The Lady Lobos’ goal came off a tap after a cross got stuck in the mud near the goal mouth.
“We had great opportunities off corners but the ball bounced around and just wouldn’t go in,” Leshinski said.
Burleson’s offense came to life Saturday in 5-0 win over Hudson. Madison Ezell and Faith Strube each scored twice and Angelica Perales added a goal.
Tuesday night, Hannah Werner scored off an assist from Faith Strube in a 4-1 non-district loss to Birdville.
The Lady Elks open District 9-5A play Jan. 27 hosting Granbury.
