Lady Elks losing skid reaches three matches
Whoever created the District 9-5A volleyball schedule did Burleson no favors.
Tuesday night, the Lady Elks finished a three-match stint where they faced the top three squads in the district.
Burleson entered the stretch with 3-0 district mark and exited it at 3-3 after falling to Centennial, Granbury and Cleburne.
The Lady Elks lost on the road Tuesday night to Cleburne, 25-15, 25-16, 25-14.
The defeat dropped the Burleson (11-20, 3-3) to fourth place in 9-5A. Joshua and Everman are tied for fifth place at 2-4. The Lady Elks play Friday at
Joshua in the final match of the first half of district play and play Tuesday at seventh-place Crowley.
“I am asking a lot of girls to play out of position and the chemistry wasn’t working for us tonight,” Burleson coach D’Anna Newton said. “We struggled to do some things and it showed. We have to give better effort and be able to do those little things.”
The Lady Elks played better last Friday night hosting district-leading Granbury. After dropping the first set, 25-5, Burleson lost the next two sets, 25-19, 25-22.
“Granbury is a good team,” Newton said. “We played with them a little bit except in that first game. We came out timid just like we did tonight. That is not the tone we want to set. We have to start out stronger.”
