Lady Elks open season

In their first action of the season, Burleson’s softball team finished sixth in the silver bracket at the DBat Mansfield Invitational Tournament.

“The team played well,” Burleson coach Summer Owen said.

The Lady Elks went 1-1-1 in pool play. Burleson faced adversity early when pitcher Kyleigh Rich was hit by a line drive in the first game on Friday. Freshman Hayley Vasquez handled most of the pitching for the remainder of the tournament.

“Hayley did a terrific job stepping up and pitched very well,” Owen said.

Burleson opened silver bracket play Friday with a 5-4 win over South Grand Prairie. Zoe Miranda drove in three runs with a home run and double. Natali Wheeler doubled in a pair of runs.

Lauren Isbell had a RBI in a 9-2 loss to Eaton Friday.

The Lady Elks defeated White Settlement Brewer, 6-2, Saturday to reach the silver bracket’s fifth-place game. Lauren Minor drove in two runs while Maddie McGovern, Julie Farley, Miranda and Isbell each had RBIs. Vasquez registered the win after allowing four hits and an earned run.

Richland topped Burleson, 6-2, in the fifth-place game. Taylor Sutton drove in two runs and Julie Farley drove in one run.

Burleson opens play today at the Black-N-Blue Tournament which the Lady Elks are co-hosting with Centennial.

The Lady Elks defeated Fort Worth Paschal, 15-14, in a marathon three-hour non-district game Tuesday night.
