Lady Elks sweep past Lady Owls
After getting off to a slow start in its District 9-5A opening-night loss at Crowley, Burleson’s volleyball team had the pedal to the metal from the start Tuesday night at Joshua,
The Lady Elks swept past the Lady Owls, 25-10, 25-17, 25-19, to even their district record at 1-1.
“This was a really good win for us to bounce back from that loss,” Burleson coach D’Anna Newton said.
Burleson (11-14, 1-1) fell at Crowley Friday night, 25-14, 25-23, 10-25, 25-27, 15-13, despite 23 kills from sophomore outside hitter Ellie Strebeck.
“We underestimated Crowley a little bit and they came out ready to play,” Newton said. “It took us to game three to start playing and before you know it was too late.”
Friday night, freshman outside hitter Emily Rich had a rough time against the Lady Eagles. She didn’t have that problem Tuesday night against another winged foe.
Rich knocked down kill after kill Tuesday night to waylay the Lady Owls.
“Emily Rich struggled on Friday night,” Newton said. “She really needed this to boost her confidence and get her going in the district play.”
Strebeck also had a nice night hitting. Newton said Strebeck was the perfect balance to Rich’s hitting.
The one thing Newton would like to see is more production from the Lady Elks middle blocker.
“Our outside game looks good right now,” Newton said. “We are just trying to get our middle going.”
The Lady Elks play Friday at Cleburne then host Everman Tuesday.
