Lady Elks volleyball camp biggest ever with 193 campers
Each year, Burleson volleyball coach D’Anna Newton has seen her Lady Elk volleyball camp grow.
Last Monday through Thursday, Newton, her coaching staff and former players worked with the biggest number ever at her camp with 193 in attendance.
The camp was split into two sessions. The morning session was for incoming first- through sixth-graders. The afternoon session included 100-plus seventh- through ninth-graders.
“It went well,” Newton said. “I was pleased with the turnout. Splitting the camp into two groups helped us concentrate on each age division.”
Newton said she was pleased to see how well the morning group performed. The younger campers had fun and learned about the fundamentals of the game, Newton said. While the older campers were preparing for volleyball at the middle school or high school level.
“I thought the talent level within each group was good,” Newton said.
Twenty-eight of the 38 incoming freshmen who have signed up for volleyball tryouts were at the camp. Volleyball practice opens Aug. 1.
“Every year we keep growing,” Newton said. “A camp this size will help our program.”
