Late errors doom Lady Elks in playoff opener
MANSFIELD - Leading 7-2 after four innings, the Burleson's softball team seemed on the verge of going up 1-0 its the best-of-three Class 5A Region II bi-district softball playoff series with Mansfield Lake Ridge.
Then things fell apart as Lake Ridge took advantage of eight Burleson errors in the last two innings to win the opener, 14-7, Thursday at Lake Ridge.
Game 2 of the series is slated for 6 p.m. Friday at Burleson. A deciding third-game if needed is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Ridge.
The Lady Elks (16-9) committed five errors in the fifth inning as the Lady Eagles (17-5) scored six runs to take an 8-6 lead. Lake Ridge, which came into the inning with one hit, had four hits in the inning.
After Burleson stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning, Lake Ridge put the game away scoring six more runs. This time the Lady Elks had three errors and the Lady Eagles collected four hits including Brittni Rufus' two-run triple.
The Lady Elks started the game strong scoring four runs in the first inning. Burleson's freshmen Audrey Schneidmiller and Brailey Wasik each drove in two runs. Schneidmiller's one-double scored Bridgette Montes, who had singled, and Lauren Isbell, who walked.
Wasik put Burleson up 4-0 when she drove the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall for a two-run home run.
The Lady Elks added a run in the third when Natali Wheeler hit a leadoff double then scored on a
one-out ground out by Schneidmiller.
Burleson went up 7-1 in the fourth inning when the bottom of the order delivered a pair of runs. Julie Farley doubled home Lauren Minor, who had reached on an error. After Maddie McGovern walked, Farley scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Trailing 7-1 Chloe Jones relieved Lake Ridge starter Kaly Gonzales in the circle. With a runner at third, Jones struck out the first two batters she faced to get out of the inning. Jones then retired nine of the next 12 Lady Elks to register the win.
