Learning to play football the Burleson way
Burleson football coach Gary McElroy isn’t sure who had more fun during last week’s Elks Football Camp.
Was it the campers or the coaches?
“Everyone had a great time,” McElroy said. “Coaches had a lot of fun working with those little kids. The kids learned quite a bit and had fun. The feedback we got from parents was good. They said they appreciated it. I think the coaches enjoyed it as much as the kids did.”
The camp, which ran last Monday through Wednesday, was for incoming kindergarteners through incoming-sixth graders.
“We had around 85 which is up significantly from last season and the year before,” McElroy said.
The thing that had McElroy excited was the size and variety of players in the incoming sixth-grade class.
“I thought the sixth-grade class. and I’m a little biased because my son is in that class and I know some of them, was well-balanced,” McElroy said. “We had about 30 in that class and I’d say half were linemen-type kids and the other half were skill-type kids so that was encouraging.”
