McElroy pleased with Elks first practice
Burleson opened the first day of fall football drills the way it open every practice Monday by working on the its victory formation.
Elks coach Gary McElroy told the players Monday morning that’s what practice is about being able to line up in the victory formation at the end of a game.
Around 140 upperclassmen went through practice Monday morning and retention was high. Teaching by the coaches was at a minimum allowing practice to flow.
“I thought our first day was really good,” McElroy said. “It may have been the best first day we’ve had in the last four years. “
One of the reasons things went so smoothly was because participation in the Elks summer strength and conditioning program went through the roof this year.
“We had great participation this summer,” McElroy said. “You could tell the kids put in their work during the summer. They weren’t fatigued and there weren’t dead legs out on the field. There were no lulls and the workout was very crisp.
The first full contact, full pads practice will be Friday.
The Elks only scrimmage will be Aug. 19 at Azle. Burleson opens the regular season Aug. 26 at home against Saginaw.
Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. “Meet the Elks” night will take place.
