Slow start hurts Lady Elks at Joshua
Slowing down Joshua’s Sarah Chretien in the first half proved difficult for Burleson’s girls basketball team Tuesday night. The senior guard scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as the Lady Owls went on to 67-45 District 9-5A win over Burleson at home. The loss dropped the Lady Elks to 0-4 in district play. Burleson hosts Everman Friday and plays Tuesday at Centennial. Joshua (1-3 in district) built a 20-10 first quarter lead behind 14 points from Chretien. By halftime, the Lady Owls led 39-19. “We had a bad first half,” Burleson coach Curtis Enis said. “We had trouble staying on Chretien in the first half. Offensively we couldn’t score with them.” In the second half, Burleson was able to match Joshua as each team scored 26 points. The problem was the Lady Owls fast start. Sasha Schoenborn led Burleson in scoring with nine points. Sarah Reid scored eight points and Raquel Jacobo finished with six points.
