Big inning lifts Lady Spartans

After falling behind 5-4 in the fifth inning, Centennial’s softball team answered with a seven-run sixth-inning runs to register an 11-5 District 9-5A victory Tuesday at Cleburne.

It was the second win for the Lady Spartans (4-6, 2-0) in district play. Centennial hosts Arlington Seguin Friday and plays Burleson Monday. The Lady Spartans host Granbury Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Spartans blew things open in the sixth after allowing a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

With one out in the sixth, Casey Hendrixson drew a walk then stole second. Kylee Gowin and Laney Vaughn followed with singles to load the bases.

Centennial regained the lead at 6-5 on Gracie Morton’s two-run single to centerfield. The Lady Spartans added another run on Samantha Barker’s double to left field. Reagan Ellison then singled to score Morton and move Barker to third for an 8-5 lead.

With two-out, Karter Hill brought home a run with an infield hit to short and Mackenzie Law ripped a run-scoring triple to finish the seven-run inning.

Serena Bersuch tossed a complete-game seven-hitter for the Lady Spartans. Bersuch allowed seven runs (five earned) while striking out three and walking three.

Centennial took a 1-0 lead in the third when Morton, who had singled with one out, scored on a double by Barker. The Lady Spartans took a 2-0 advantage in the fourth on a run-scoring ground out.

Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Centennial scored twice to pull ahead 4-3. Morton opened the inning by reaching third thanks to an error. With one out, Reagan Ellison reached base on an error that scored Morton. Ellison made her way to third on the error and scored on Mac Harshbarger’s RBI sacrifice fly.

Lady Spartans get in games at Wylie Tournament

Centennial got in its first tournament games of the season over the weekend at the Wylie Tournament.

The Lady Spartans got plenty of games in as they finished with a 2-4 record in three days of play. Centennial collected wins over Boyd, 3-1, Thursday and a 7-3 victory Friday over South Grand Prairie. The Lady Spartans lost to Sulphur Springs (7-2), Wolfforth Frenship (11-2), Wylie (10-0) and Rockwall 12-2.

In Thursday’s win over Boyd, the Spartans had five hits and nine walks. Ellison doubled in two runs in the seventh for the game-winner. Madison Thurman brought home a run in the second with a fielder’s choice. Hill had a pair of hits in the win.

Starter Law allowed one run on six hits in four innings. Bersuch got the win. She worked three scoreless innings while striking out three.

Law registered the win Friday against South Grand Prairie allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings. Law fanned one, walked one and gave up six hits. At the plate, Law went two for three with a run scored, an RBI and double.

Vaughn went two for three with a run scored and three RBI. Hill and Carley Eller also drove in runs. Hill had two hits.
