Boydstun takes over Lady Spartans program

When Kara Cuellar decided to leave coaching, Brian Boydstun, Centennial’s boys’ soccer coach, stepped into the breach and took over the girls soccer program at Centennial.

So far things are going well for the Lady Spartans and their new coach.

Over the weekend, the Lady Spartans went 3-0 at Richland Winter Blast Tournament and didn’t allow a goal. Centennial shutout Amarillo (4-0), The Colony (2-0) and Birdville (4-0).

Not a bad effort for a relatively young squad that is still learning the way Boydstun wants them to play.

“I think they have adjusted well,” Boydstun said. “It’s been a pretty simple transition. This is a very young group which makes things even more exciting.”

The key for the Lady Spartans will be the play of their defense where all five players return. Junior keeper Reese McCain might not face that many shots this season thanks in part to the defenders playing in front of her.

“As far as I’m concerned everything starts with defense,” Boydstun said. “I didn’t mess with the defense. I wanted to keep things stable on the defense. That should allow them to play better as the season goes on.”

Three of Centennial’s defenders all play on the same club team and that is a big plus.

Junior Cooper Cowan and sophomores Apolonia Wright and Kayla Smith play for Sparta FC. The fourth defender is junior Ashli Galupi.

Wright was the District 9-5A co-defensive newcomer of the year last season. Smith was a first-team all-district player and Cowan and Galupi were second-team players.

The Lady Spartans should be solid in the midfielder with seniors Madison Pewett (second-team all-district), Avery Shutter (honorable mention) and Megan Walker back.

First-team player Casie Watson, a junior, is also back in the midfield. Sophomores Brooklyn Holybee and Sarah Tate will also see a lot of playing time in the midfield.

Several players in the midfield could also push forward at times to help out sophomore forward Brooke Boyer. Once she is eligible, junior Jordan Rosser could be a threat at forward. Rosser, a transfer from Burleson, is still waiting out her transfer.

The Lady Spartans return to action Jan. 17-19 at the Johnny Baggett Memorial Kick-Off Classic.
