Crowley tops Lady Spartans
Usually it’s the boys basketball games between Centennial and Crowley that are tight but Friday night the game between the Lady Spartans and Lady Eagles was a nail-biter.
In the end, Crowley came out of the District 9-5A meeting with a 54-52 win over the Lady Spartans.
The Lady Spartans had a chance to tie the game with just over a second to play but couldn’t get a shot off.
The loss was the first for the Centennial in 9-5A play. The Lady Spartans (2-1 in district) return the 9-5A competition Jan. 3 hosting Cleburne. Before that Centennial will play in Dec. 27-29 at the Aggieland Invitational. The Lady Spartans open the tournament against League City Clear Falls.
“I was so proud of the girls,” Centennial coach Valerie Wootan said. “They battled and battled down to the last second. It’s one of those losses where we could walk away with our head up because everything was left on the floor. We have to take the things we did well and continue to build on those and work on the areas we struggled with.”
Kayleigh Benson led the Lady Spartans in scoring with 16 points. Karly Burson finished with 11 points and Abbi Williams tossed in nine points. Molly McCalla tallied seven points.
After one quarter of play, Crowley led Centennial, 16-15. The Lady Eagles (3-0) held a 33-26 advantage at halftime.
Centennial fought back in the third quarter using a 12-8 run to close to with in 41-38 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Eagles, 14-13, but couldn’t overcome the third quarter deficit.
Crowley’s Taelour Pruitt lead all scorers with 18 points. Avery Brittingham chipped in 15 points and Mia Williams tallied 10 points.
