Lady Spartans belt Western Hills, 10-0
Centennial’s softball team stayed true to form Thursday night.
The Lady Spartans came into the game averaging 10 runs per game and did just that run-ruling Fort Worth Western Hills, 10-0, in five innings in a one-game Class 5A Region I bi-district playoff at home.
Centennial, which is on a 23-game winning streak, will face Lake Dallas in the area-round of the playoff game at 7 p.m. Friday at Saginaw Chisholm Trail. The Lady Spartans (26-3) are currently ranked No. 8 in Class 5A in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.
Freshman Haley Murrell and junior Crystal Peebles combined for a four-hit shutout. Murrell tossed four innings, allowed four hits, walked two and fanned eight. Peebles struck out the side in the fifth.
After stranding two runners in the first inning, the Lady Spartans broke through with a pair of runs in the second. Marley Eller opened the inning with double and scored on an error when Reagan Ellison reached second on an error. Ellison stole third with one out and scored on Brooklyn Freeman’s sacrifice fly.
Centennial scored three runs in the third. Bailey White singled in Gracie Morton, who had tripled, and Eller tripled home a run. An Ellison run-scoring double put the Lady Spartans up 5-0.
In the fourth, Morton tripled home Freeman and Sydney Friend, who had singled and reached on an error to open the inning. Morton put Centennial up 8-0 by racing home on throw during her triple. Ellison padded the lead with a run-scoring single.
The Lady Spartans completed the run-rule win when Freeman, who had moved to third on triple by Friend, scored on a wild pitch.
